About the Journal

Aims & Scope

The Journal of Research in Interprofessional Practice and Education (JRIPE) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that disseminates original research, theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and evidence-informed knowledge to advance interprofessional practice and education to improve health and social care delivery and health status of individuals, families, and communities. JRIPE is committed to publishing global perspectives. The journal strives for equitable international representation, recognizing that regions are at varying stages of development of interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP).

JRIPE invites rigorous research that advances knowledge about IPECP. This can include:

  1. Processes and mechanisms involved in interprofessional practice and education and how they are linked to relevant outcomes at the micro (i.e., patient/client, family, health and social care providers), meso (i.e., organization, community, team), and macro (i.e., health and social care systems) levels. Studies based on satisfaction surveys must make a substantive contribution to knowledge about these processes and mechanisms;
  1. Development of evidence related to above-noted processes and mechanisms;
  1. Theoretical articles, which differ from empirical papers as they do not necessarily report original data from a study or experiment the author(s) completed. Instead, they challenge and refine foundational concepts in the field. This encompasses critical examination of pre-existing or novel concepts or theoretical frameworks pertinent to IPECP, including: their application in various contexts; cross-disciplinary reconsiderations or reinterpretations of these ideas or theories; and propositions of new ways of thinking about IPECP inspired by contemporary or emerging ideas.
  1. Models of collaborative work (e.g., teamwork, collaboration, coordination, and networking)1 and modes of service delivery;
  1. Knowledge exchange between those who fund and conduct research, and those who use, apply, and benefit from research in practice, community, and policy settings.

To foster shared understanding, JRIPE adopts and endorses the following definitions and requires authors to use the lexicon consistent with the IPECP field (2):

Interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP): A term used to describe the total scientific field of study encompassing interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP, see 2).2

Interprofessional education (IPE): Occasions when members or students of two or more professions learn about, with and from each other, to improve collaboration, and the quality of care and services (3).

Interprofessional collaborative person-centred practice: IPCPCP refers to a model of collaborative practice that involves a partnership between a team of health/social care professionals and patients/clients/families/communities in a participatory, collaborative, and coordinated approach to shared decision-making to deliver the highest quality of care (2).2

Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP): IPCP in healthcare occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, carers, and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings (4).2

Journal History

The Journal of Research in Interprofessional Practice and Education (JRIPE) was conceived in 2007 through a collaborative initiative led by Hassan Soubhi and John Gilbert, alongside a national planning committee of scholars and practitioners in interprofessional education. Developed in close connection with the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative, the journal was envisioned as an open-access platform to advance research, theory, and knowledge exchange in the emerging field of IPECP.

JRIPE published its first issue in 2009, supported by initial funding from Health Canada, and quickly established itself as a venue for rigorous and innovative scholarship at the intersection of education, practice, and health systems.

From its inception, the journal benefited from the sustained leadership of Hassan Soubhi, who served as Editor-in-Chief and guided its development, growth, and scholarly direction over more than a decade.

In 2024, JRIPE entered a new phase with the appointment of a collective editorial leadership team composed of Sylvia Langlois, Kelly Lackie, and Stephanie Fox. This transition reflects the journal’s ongoing commitment to collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and the advancement of IPECP in diverse contexts.
